No deer was harmed in the making of this film. In fact, �The Killing of a Sacred Deer� does not involve deers at all. The title is metaphoric: the �sacred deer� resembles the tragedy Iphigenia from the Greek mythology�Iphigenia was sacrificed for the sins of her father. Hey, don�t worry! That is not a spoiler. Just from the film posters you can all tell that �The Killing of a Sacred Deer� is nothing about deer or animals or anything like director Yorgos Lanthimos � previous film, �The Lobster� . It is more about how someone has to sacrifice his beloved ones because of his sins. A rather familiar theme, isn�t it?�except if you already knew Yorgos Lanthimos� works, you know things are not going any familiar. read more �

Once I lost my faith in horror films. Nothing they could do to reinvent horror films, I once thought, so this genre might be just full with remakes and old formulas. "Berberian Sound Studio" breaks that assumption. I'm not saying that this film is really that great, but I'm just so surprised by how different this film delivers horror to the viewers. Call me exaggerating, but my call is "Berberian Sound Studio" never tries to scare the viewers; instead it puzzles them and leaves them in mild confusion�which is worth the same to being scared that any mainstream horrors even fail to do. read more �

This is gonna be a ridiculous review, LOL. First, I've never seen Sam Raimi's "The Evil Dead" , from which this movie was remade. Second, I'm an anti-gore viewer. You may laugh. I can't resist seeing a movie with so much gore scenes and blood (I believe I have this sort of phobia to blood and violence; what's it called?). But I was so intrigued by Fede Alvarez 's version of "Evil Dead" , that in the last minute after reaching the end of the queue before buying the ticket, I finally made up my mind and decided to watch it. And then my blood rushed from my head to my feet all of a sudden. LOL. read more �

�Belenggu� is a 8-year-old dream. Upi Avianto , best known as just Upi , is the auteur-director that keeps her dream in her only mind before she got the chance to make it real. Actually, I always love seeing movies like �Belenggu� currently showing in our local cinemas. See, it is very rare seeing such kind of smart thriller movie in Indonesia �maybe it takes at least a year to see another movie like this�and that�s why I welcomed �Belenggu� so much. Despite the fact that the movie itself was not that mind-blowing, still I have this wow feeling after watching it. read more �

What really makes human scared? The answers of this question may be so much different among people. Some may find crime as a terrifying thing, some others may be scared only by ghosts or inexistential beings, while the rests may be frightened by blood and gore. There might be a reason of cultural background that affects people to have different answers. Filmmakers also have different ways to show up their own creativity of �scaring viewers� in order to make a good horror movie. While many other movies struggling with how to choose good horrors, �The Blair Witch Project� struggled with how to deliver horror well. And it turns into a great success. read more �

Did any of you notice that I put this movie in the considerable part of my 2012�s year-end watchlist ? There are two big reasons why I did that. First, it�s kinda cool seeing 26 horror short films wrapped in a movie. �The ABCs of Death� can be the first movie in history that make this nightmarish idea possible. Second, Timo Tjahjanto is one of the director whose short films included in this omnibus. He�s an Indonesian director. It�s a rare opportunity seeing a product of our local cinemas packaged together with many other directors from many countries and released in Hollywood. Therefore, I watched this flick and hoped that I won�t have any nightmares in my sleep after watching it. read more �

Hansel and Gretel were two little children. They were left by their father in the woods because of their stepmother�s evil plan. In the wood, Hansel and Gretel found a house made out of candies. An old woman opened the door for them and asked them to come in. Later they found out that the old woman was a wicked witch, who then put Hansel into jail and forced Gretel to be a slave. But the witch didn�t know how smart the siblings were: they tricked the witch, burnt her, brought all her treasures to home, and then lived happily ever after. Oops, although both share the same leading roles, unfortunately �Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters� is far less exhilarating than the aforementioned fanciful fairy tale and, of course, not addressed to under-aged viewers. read more �
